How To Find The Song You Don’t Know The Name Of?

How many times have you tried to remember a song but could not recollect what is its name? Happens to me every time and it is really annoying. Especially, when you are at a party or in a good mood to hear songs you love.

Thanks to the Internet, now you can find your favourite song online. All you need is a mobile phone with an Internet connection.

Now that you are looking for a song, there are two chances:

  1. You know the lyrics of the song.
  2. You know the tune of the song.

How To Find a Song by its Lyrics

If you know the lyrics of the song then you have done well. All you got to do is type the lyrics in Google search and chances are that you will get your song in the search results.

Here’s an example:

I usually listen to the late 80s or 90s songs but there are some latest songs that I might have heard once or twice but don’t know the name of. I wanted to tell my friend to play this song at a party but did not know the name of the song. All I knew was it has lyrics like “can’t nobody tell me nothing“.

A simple search on Google tells me what song it is. Below is the screenshot of the search results.

Google tells me that the song name is “Old Town Road” and it is sung by an American rapper called Lil Nas X. Google will also provide me links with more details along with the song lyrics and YouTube link. It’s that easy!

So finding a song that you know the lyrics of is easy. But what If you don’t know the lyrics?

How To Find a Song by Tune

Many times we just know the tune of the song. We can hum the song but don’t know the lyrics. Thanks to Google, you can now find a song just by humming the tune of it on your phone.

Here are the steps:

  1. Download the Google app on your phone. Most android will have it installed by default.
  2. Click on the Microphone and say ‘what’s that song’ or click the button at the bottom that says ‘Search for a song’.
  3. Google will ask you to play, sing or hum a song.
  4. Just sing the song or sing the tune of the song.
  5. In few seconds Google will display a list of possible matches.

The best thing about this feature is it works in most of the languages. I always use this app to find English and Hindi songs and it has always found the right matches for me.

Other Apps to Find a Song

Shazam

With Shazam, you can get details of a song. Shazam is an app that is available on both iOS and Android. Just open the app and press the tag button while placing the phone near speakers. Shazam will recognize the song and provide all details like the singer, band, YoutTube video etc.

With the free version of Shazam, you can search up to 5 songs in a month. Shazam works only with pre-recorded music which means you cannot use it to find a song playing in a live concert.

Siri and Alexa

Lot of us are now used to either Siri or Alexa. You can just ask your favorite personal assistant by playing a song and just as what song is this. Once found, your personal assistant will let you know the details of the song being played.

SoundHound

SoundHound is another app that is available on both iOS and Android. SoundHound works similar to Shazam and provides song details with a tap of a button. Unlike Shazam, SoundHound also has a hands free option where you can just say ‘OK SoundHound, what song is this’ and it will give you details of the song.

With my experience, SoundHound is not as good as Shazam or Google voice search.

Midomi

Just like Shazam, the Midomi app can find song details for you. Just grab a mic and sing or hum the song for about 10 seconds and Midomi will give you a list of best matches.
